Once again...

I thought winter was over and spring was here. I guess that happens this weekend when it hits a high in the mid-70's.

Map Composition

Here is my map.

Map Lettering Lab

My map of the Florida Keys.

Given that we are expected to receive 2"-6" of snow, it made this lab seem semi-cruel.

Good Map

http://www.med.unc.edu/www/files/unchealthaffairsmap_08.pdf

This map is good for a few reasons. All the information is contained on the map its self. It has a insert of the bigger picture of the area to help if you have to move from on map to another with details that would help with the conversion. The design is simple and effective for the user to find where one is at and how to get where one needs to go.

Bad map

http://www.salemstate.edu/maps/

I think this a bad for a few reasons. One the image doesn't contain the dot items, if the second page is separated you are lost. While semi pleasant to look at there is much busy artwork to confuse or lead some astray. Lastly and maybe more importantly it has the north arrow pointing down on the paper. It can confuse the viewer in two ways: if you missed the north arrow among the pretty graphic you heading the wrong once you figure out where you are at and want to go. If you made it past that issue, most people or myself would turn the map around so north is up. Once you do that, all the text is upside down and confusion is had by all. All the work to make it pretty is lost once the map reader can't easily use the map to get around.

Mental Mapping

I prefer to work outdoors sometimes, either on the clock or off. Having lived in IL and MO, I rather live and work where it is warm and winter is short.
